My Beloved Simon

Back in July I was fostering a little chihuahua named Simon who had been pulled from the Orange County shelter. He already had a committed home in Canada, but the sweet little thing was too skinny to fly, so I brought him home and fattened him up for a few weeks before sending him off to his new home!

Although I’ve loved every one of my fosters, Simon was something else… This little nugget just had a different charm about him. Always in my lap, always giving me kisses, and his curly tail and floppy ears always made me giggle. After a few weeks of good food and good company, (my two dogs loved him, too; for a few weeks after he left, I’d ask Bambi, “where’s Simon??” and she’d look at the door) it was time to send the little dude off to Halifax. As I say with all my fosters: Another gut-wrenching goodbye. I had to leave him in his crate at the Air Canada cargo unit, and the 30 minutes I was there are ones I will never forget. I just wish I didn’t turn around at the very end as I was leaving to look at him, because he looked back at me as if pleading, “Where are you going??” I don’t remember ever crying as hard as I did that day.

But Simon’s story has the happiest ending: He is now with a lovely woman in Canada and has two brothers and a sister!! I received pictures from her shortly after Simon arrived home, and already he was snuggled up with the other dogs, looking happy as a clam. Deana tells me he is still a big cuddler :)

Yesterday, I received a package in the mail from Canada and eagerly ripped it open knowing exactly what was in there… Simon!

It was one of the most thoughtful gestures of my life; not only a framed photo of Simon, a photo of him with Santa, (ha!! how freakin’ cute is that?!) but also an adorable necklace with a little chihuahua on it from The Animal Rescue Site. With the purchase of their products, funds are donated toward food and care for rescue animals… Made my day!! I cried reading the card, of course, but it was a happy cry… I’m so thankful Simon came into my life and that he is in a safe and loving home!! A big, big thank you to Deana for taking the time to update me!
